June 24th, 2013 E-Learning

Annual TrendsLearning trends are starting to take on a whole new shape as schools and businesses leverage modern technologies and strategies to creatively deliver content in various ways. Classrooms are seeing an uptick in learning management systems for blended learning purposes, while businesses are taking advantage of improved delivery methods from new APIs which better enable mobile learning.  When looking at the 21st century learning, some of the more common trends include:

1. Real World Application: It isn’t uncommon now to see project based learning engage students with the practical elements of the content being taught. This allows them to apply the theories to realty and see them in action. A great strategies as well in the corporate arena.

2. Elearning & Mobile Learning:  Online education has been around for a while now, but it is being taken more serious each and every year.  In fact, nearly one-third of all college students enroll for at least one online course program.  One study suggests that 65% of educational institutions consider online learning as a key component for continued educational success.

3. Gamification: One of the biggest trends in elearning is the use of gamification. In an educational setting, one study reported that nearly 43% of teachers have said they incorporated online games into their classroom.  Adding simple gamification has never been easier – in fact, LearnDash even has its own gamification component.

4. Emerging use of Open Source Textbooks: This is a big one in the educational arena. Open source text books are now expected to spread 25% of the textbook market in the coming decade. This is making many textbook publishers rather nervous as they see their profits will likely dwindle. What’s nice about these textbooks is that they are usable on tablet and mobile devices as well.

The learning environment is constantly evolving as we continue the constant search to find the optimal ways to deliver content to users.  One thing is for sure, being in school today isn’t what it used to be 😉
