3 Trends of Digital Education

webinarpicDigital content delivery is opening new possibilities in education. Traditional teaching was delivered in a “one size fits all” manner, which made it easy to leave learners behind. Today though, the technology-enabled solutions help create a custom experience.

But how do you define digital education? I suppose there could be a variety of defining figures, but there are three trends in particular that the digital education trend brings to the traditional teaching methodology – all improve learning outcomes.

1. Digital Content - Textbooks today are going digital, and the sale of digital textbooks is expected to rapidly grow over the next decade. In 2010, digital textbook sales accounted for only 1.5% of textbook sales. Today they equate to 19.5%. In 2016, the  projected market-share is 36%.

2. Mass Distribution - Transforming content to digital outlets streamlines the distribution and enables learning to happen from anywhere Рwhich people prefer. The online college course enrollment trend supports this. By way of example, growth in this segment went from about 1.5 million people (2002) to 6 million (2009).

3. Personalized Learning - Probably the greatest advantage of digital learning is the ability to have personalized learning for the user. Online content delivery leaves more time for the teacher to act as a guide and facilitator of the learning experience, helping students who need additional assistance in grasping key concepts.

Digital education, particularly in the form of blended learning programs, are growing. The education community is already adopting new technologies that support blended learning environments – such as cloud computing, learning management systems, open content, and mobile learning.

The tools are there, all that is left is to plan and execute a proper implementation.
