Setting Up Your DNS to Use Your Own Domain Name

If you want to personalize your site even more and have purchased your own domain, you can use your own domain to point to your LearnDash Cloud Site. Instead of having the generic and randomly assigned temporary domain name to your site, you can use your own domain when you plan to go live with your site.

LearnDash can configure that for you using the Go Live widget, but first you need to manually set up your DNS to point your temporary domain to your own domain name. Follow along to see how to do that.

Adding A Records to Connect Your Site

Adding an A record to your domain just means pointing the IP Address to the live and permanent one that you want to use.

For this, you have to log in and update this on your domain registrar, the ones whom you registered your domains with, and update the records. If you don’t have access to where you can add these records, you would have to contact your domain registrar to have this done.

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Go to your domain registrar and log in to your account.
  2. Depending on your domain registrar, you have to look for “DNS Zones”, “Domain Zones”, or “Host Records”.
  3. Once you find the DNS Zones, click on “Add a New Record”
  4. Add the following records:
    Type: A Record
    Host: @
Value/Target: IP Address displayed in the go live widget
    TTL: Automatic

  5. If you want to use the “www” version, you can also add the following records:
    Type: A Record
    Host: www
Value/Target: IP Address displayed in the go live widget
    TTL: Automatic
  6. Once that’s done, you’re all set for the LearnDash Go Live widget to configure everything.

Take note that these changes may not take effect immediately, sometimes it takes up to 72 hours for the DNS to propagate completely.

Here are a few references from different popular domain registrars on how to configure their DNS.
