Wouldn’t it be great if you could get all of the functionality of Adobe Captivate without the hefty $700+ price tag? Well, now you (almost) can with this free alternative to Adobe Captivate for e-Learning development.

If you are strapped for cash, or simply need to just do a quick demonstration with some Captivate-like type features, then ActivePresenter can help. Depending on your needs this free tool enables you to record your screen in a eerily similar interface as Adobe Captivate. You can even add custom call out buttons detailing the different steps and/or any other information.

ActivePresenter’s free edition is limited, the most limiting feature to me is the inability to export to flash. But hey, it can make some solid MP4 videos (as well as other formats), and it even is SCORM 1.2/2004 compatible, so not all is lost. Oh, and if you decide you like it just as much as Adobe Captivate, the price point is a lot easier on your wallet for many of the same features – feel free to compare the different features and make an educated decision.

Personally, if you need Adobe Captivate, I would recommend just buying that program. The main reason: the support system. That is worth the extra cost alone. I don’t think you’re going to find too many active forums for ActivePresenter anytime soon. But for the free edition, it’s a pretty solid price.

One last thing: If you only need Adobe Captivate for a limited time, you could always download the 30 day free trial. The free trial has the same functionality as the purchased version – you can even publish!

Have fun!

Trying to find a free comparable to Storyline, Lectora, and Flash too…. Any ideas??

Hi all,

I’ve had very good results using Wink. It is available at the website below. It’s free and allows one to capture screens either through a trigger (Prt Scrn) or timed so as to make a movie. Once the various screens are captures you can add annotations, call out screens, embed images etc. It is extremely powerful for a free software. There is also a portable edition that runs off a USB key.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

for me Wink is the best screencast

So true! It is a pity that there is no further development. Wink just did (and still does) everything I need.
