How to Easily Add Gamification to Your WordPress LMS

cubepointsIt’s all the rage these days, right?  Gamification is what everyone is trying to incorporate into their classroom or corporate environment in some way, shape, or form.  I think when done right, “gamifying” elements of learning certainly has its advantages (but let’s not get carried away) :)

For many people, adding some sort of gaming seems like quite the task – but for a WordPress LMS, it is actually quite easy.  We looked into creating our own game mechanism for LearnDash, but as many of you know, there are plugins out there for just about anything – sure enough, there is one for adding a simple gaming layer to your learning management system.

Let me formally introduce you to CubePoints, a simple (and free) WordPress plugin that instantly creates a reward system for users interacting with your LMS.  Using this nifty tool, you can reward users for logging in, leaving comments/answer questions on your lessons, and more.  You can also display point leaders and administer contests!

Pretty simple huh?

Quite honestly, in order to incorporate this type of gaming would take either time or money in most other learning management systems. This is the power of WordPress and the its immense support community.  If you want to expand your LMS?  Click a couple buttons and you have gamification, forums, chat features, and so on.  In today’s social learning environment,  it just makes sense.

Not sure how to get started?  Just drop us a line and we’d be happy to assist you in getting LearnDash set-up for your organization or classroom!

  1. Hi Justin!

I am wondering about this…. would it be possible for users to get points for getting quiz questions right? I’m thinking of having my quizzes developed in Articulate Storyline, uploading it to WP but rewarding students with these points. Also, I’ll probably need students to hand in extra assignments through voice recording, sending pictures and writing text (need to find a technology for this). In this case, could the teacher manually give a student points instead of the traditional grading concept?

    Thanks!

    • Hi Fabiana, thanks for the comment.

The way you describe it, using the Articulate quizzing functionality would mean it rests “outside” of WordPress, and therefore can’t acquire points as assigned by cubepoints. There is currently a functionality to manually assign points though :) – we could also do some custom dev if you wanted to use CubePoints with additional LearnDash functionality.

      • Thanks for the super quick reply, Justin!
I’m still in the first stages of my course development, but I’ll most probably go for some custom dev with you guys when the time is right. I’ll keep watching you and learning more about the subject in the mean time!

        Thanks!
        Fabiana

    Hello Justin,

I would like first to say thank you for this great article.

Could you please send me, is it possible to customize CubePoints plugin to add some new competitions different than comments, posts and new members, for example guessing a photo or buying it?

    Thank you in advance!

    Best regards,
    Momir
