A Word On Taking Shortcuts

annoyed-elearningMuch of what is written about on this site has to do with the elearning industry, and in some ways this article is no exception.

However, it probably goes without saying that this topic can apply to many other parts of life, not just elearning.

But since we’re on an elearning site, we’ll keep it on point 🙂 .

I have noticed some people who intend to use LearnDash to sell online courses (i.e. start an elearning business) come in with grand ambitions but eventually lose momentum along the way.

Selling courses looks pretty easy, and perhaps in some ways it is when you compare it to other types of businesses you could start. However, creating the course, the marketing material, the brand, the network, and everything in-between is not easy. It’s work. Hard work, and certainly not always fun.

If you want to sell an online course then I can promise you that you will face trials and tribulations along the way. It can be related to your budget, time, your family’s support (or lack thereof), and so on.

Along your journey you will come across products and people out there that will try to sell you on some “secret formula”.

Deep down we all know that one doesn’t exist.

If you fall victim to a “snake-oil salesman” (you’re not alone, I think most people have at some point), then chalk it up as a lesson learned and dedicate yourself to staring your business the right way.

Effort = Results

I wish I could take credit for that saying, but credit is due to the bumper of a Ford Escape I saw the other day while driving.

While I normally laugh at bumper stickers, this one stuck in my mind.

However, I would make one slight change.

From my experience, I think it’s probably more proper to say “consistent effort = desired results”

Effort must be continuous because not all of your efforts are going to yield the results you desire. When efforts don’t work in their favor, people claim that they become “burned out”.

However, if you are relentless in your pursuit, then you WILL reach your desired end-goal.

If you are thinking about getting into the online course business then you will do yourself a big favor to understand why it is you want to sell courses. If you think it’s easy get-rich-quick money then you might be better off investing your time and energy into something else.
